In-Home Care,
At Every Stage
Our mission at Birth Well Physical Therapy is to help you feel strong, informed, and confident throughout the journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. As a physical therapist, dancer, climber, and mom, Sara Hunter founded Birth Well to provide individualized perinatal pelvic physical therapy and education in the comfort of your own home.
We believe recovery should fit into your life—not require you to rearrange it. We make it easier to prioritize your health while navigating preparing for birth, caring for a newborn, and returning to the activities you love by providing in-home pregnancy and postpartum pelvic floor therapy.
Our goal is to create a supportive, personalized experience where you feel empowered to understand and care for your changing body. Whether you are preparing for birth, recovering after delivery, or working toward feeling like yourself again, we want you to have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to move through this season of change and beyond.
Nurturing movement. Restoring strength.
Common Questions
What should I expect during my first session?
Your initial evaluation includes a discussion of your medical history and current concerns as well as a physical assessment of your posture, movement, and muscle function. An internal exam is a key piece of information but is not required and internal muscle function will only be assessed with the express consent of both patient and practitioner. You will never be asked to undress during virtual evaluations or treatment sessions. We'll work together to create a personalized recovery plan tailored to your needs.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No, you do not need a referral to book with Birth Well PT. In many states, including Massachusetts, physical therapy is available through Direct Access, meaning you may not need a referral for an evaluation. However, we do provide a Superbill for insurance reimbursement and company requirements vary, so we recommend checking your specific policy.
When should I start pelvic floor PT?
The right time to begin is whenever you feel ready for support. During pregnancy, early physical therapy can help manage discomfort before it progresses, while sessions in the final weeks focus on movement strategies for birth. There’s truly no expiration date on seeking care; your healing journey is personal and valid at any stage. For postpartum recovery, we can start gentle work like body mechanics and pelvic floor education as early as two weeks after birth. To ensure your safety and comfort, we wait until you’ve had your routine check-up with a medical provider before performing any internal assessments or biofeedback.
Do I need any special equipment for a virtual session?
You won't need specialized equipment to begin. Simply bring your focus and a readiness to understand your evolving body. We will provide the guidance you need to thrive. If you already own basic fitness tools at home, we can integrate them into your custom routine.
Other common concerns:
Your comfort is our priority. Pelvic therapy should never be painful. While some techniques may feel unfamiliar, we move at your pace to ensure you feel safe. Internal assessments are highly effective for healing but are entirely optional; they are not gynecological exams and involve communication every step of the way. You are always welcome to have a support person join you during our sessions.
If you have any other questions or concerns before we begin, please reach out to us at care@birthwellpt.com. We are here to support you!
